Origin:
This variety originates from the Utiel-Requena area in Valencia and from La Manchuela in Castilla-La Mancha.
Origin of the variety in Navarre: It was probably introduced into Navarre in the late 19th century. It is found with some frequency interplanted in Navarrese vineyards of red Garnacha, mainly in the Middle Zone of Navarre.
Current cultivation: Bobal is a recommended variety in Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha and the Valencian Community. Its cultivation is also authorised in the Chartered Community of Navarre, Andalusia, Catalonia and Extremadura.
Agronomic characteristics: It stands out for its rusticity and tolerance to disease. The cluster is medium to large in size and is characterised by the great compactness of its berries, which makes them difficult to separate from the peduncle. The berries are medium-sized and spherical, with a blue-black skin and medium skin thickness. The pulp is not coloured, but it is juicy and soft, with seeds present. The leaf is orbicular in shape, with five lobes.
Winemaking potential: It produces alcoholic wines with intense colour, dark cherry tones with violet hues, light aromas with herbaceous notes, medium acidity, a rough character and a high tannin content.
