Origin:

In 2008, during work to collect vines of the Garnacha Blanca variety, several vines were marked in a vineyard over 70 years old located in the Valdecularin area of the municipality of Bargota, in Navarre. The white colour of the berries and the fact that a large percentage of the existing vines in the vineyard were Garnacha Tinta initially led the winegrower to confuse this vine stock with the Garnacha Blanca variety. However, in 2009 it was confirmed to be a new, previously unknown variety for which no records existed. After the required characterisation and evaluation phases, this variety was entered in the Register of Commercial Varieties.

Origin of the variety in Navarre: Studies carried out show a kinship between Oneca and two other unknown varieties found only in Aragon, suggesting that it may be as ancient as they are.
